Inspiration

Online shopping scams are increasingly sophisticated, often using slick storefronts and fake scarcity tactics like artificial countdown timers or live stock counters to rush buyers into making risky payments. Many shoppers fall victim not because a site lacks an SSL certificate, but because of psychological pressure. Checkout Guard was created to give shoppers the check they need before entering sensitive details online.

What it does

Checkout Guard acts as a precheckout inspection dashboard. Users paste an online store URL or upload a checkout screenshot, and the app instantly analyses the page for deceptive patterns. It provides a visual 0 to 100 Trust Score and categorises stores into clear safety states. Beyond basic security, it breaks down specific deceptive signals while recognising legitimate marketing tactics used by established retailers.

How we built it

The platform was built using Vite, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. The interface uses AI assisted generation workflows to create a responsive single page dashboard. The core analysis engine evaluates page metadata, URL patterns, and allows user provided screenshots to aim to protect against common ecommerce deception rules to generate real time safety scores.

Challenges we ran into

Differentiating between fraudulent storefronts and legitimate retailers with pushy sales tactics was a key design hurdle. Getting the scoring logic to flag genuine threats without misclassifying reputable stores required careful comparison of scam indicators against established business tactics.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating an intuitive Trust Score meter that explains safety risks in plain English. Successfully spotting deceptive scarcity patterns that traditional tools typically miss

What we learned

Modern ecommerce scams rely heavily on psychological manipulation Presenting risk analysis through clear visual badges makes safety information much more actionable for everyday consumers

What's next for Checkout Guard

Fully implementing screenshot analysis capabilities using multimodal vision models to detect fake sellers automatically Eventually developing a lightweight browser extension for automated real-time background checking during checkout
