CheckMate

Inspiration

One of the most common issues today is fraud and disinformation. It has become harder than ever to distinguish between truth and lie. With so many ways to forge data and create malicious sites, even big companies aren't always safe. That's why we decided to create CheckMate, an quick detectors that assesses a website using multiple metrics.

What it does

CheckMate is an extremely simple free to use, open source website. Simply enter the link of the website you wish to check, and within seconds a full analysis will be provided.

How we built it

Because we planned on analyzing the website though multiple metrics, we set out the code skeleton and broke down the code into modules, each responsible for one variable. We then put everything together, created a very simple website, hosted it through Vercel. The overall structure also took a hybrid module, blurring the lines between a traditional algorithm and AI based design. Also, a lot of prompt engineering.

Challenges we ran into

This hackathon and project was a first for many of our group. For some, this was even our first hackathon. One of the biggest struggles was the coordination between members, as well as integration of each individual's parts. We found it difficult at times to have all members work efficiently at the same time, as there were many co-dependencies that made workflow very linear.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

With only 36 hours (including sleep) and a team of 4 very inexperienced members, we were quite proud to have been able to pull this off at all. We also did it with no energy drinks or even coffee (although we did eat MANY snacks).

What's next for CheckMate

Given the time constraints, there were many parts that we were not able to get through. If there was one thing, we were a bit unhappy about the final presentation. It was originally planned to take the form of a Chrome extension, but due to our inexperience we ultimately settled for a generic website. If this gains enough traction and the team feels motivated enough, this might be our next step.
