We wanted to create something that really harnessed the theme of WHACK 2022: 'Connection and Wellness'. We thought we would combine the two and create the idea of an app called "CheckInn" that boost your wellness by increasing your connection with your loved ones.

What it does

CheckInn is an app where you can easily check in on your community (friends, family, significant other, etc)– and lets others check on you too! Our app creates a safe space to share by overcoming the uncomfortability, forgetfulness, and social anxiety that leads us to not checking in on our loved ones as much as we should. The completed version of CheckInn would let you privately connect to people you wish to connect with and give you a wellness prompt every day. You can both complete the wellness prompt yourself and look at how your connections responded to the same prompt. Reading your loved ones’ CheckInn updates can spark a conversation to give support to one another, and you can see how others are doing even when you can’t be together in person. Overall, it’s a quick thing to do, but it can make a big impact.

How we built it

We focused on two main aspects: building a beta version of the code and designing the visuals of the app. We coded many of CheckInn's function with Java in BlueJ, including the storage of questions and answers, the user's connections, answering the daily prompt, and more. We also used Krita to illustrate the four main pages of the app, which gives you a sense of what a final version of the app would look like.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was just making sure the scope of our project was something we could complete in the limited time we had. While we would have loved to have been able to build a full version of this app, our time, resources, and knowledge were limiting factors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of both the code and the illustrations. We worked really well together, had fun, and were able to create something that would benefit others. Most of all, we are proud of all the hard work we put into this, especially since this is our first hackathon!

What we learned

We learned that we can successfully come up with a strong pitch for a new idea in less than a day. We also learned that while we face some challenges, we can overcome them to make the best of what we have. Additionally, we learned how to collaborate even better together.

What's next for CheckInn

The next steps for CheckInn would be to take it from the beta code and illustrations to a working app. Some specific steps would include being able to connect the apps users to each other, implementing the code using programming for iOS/android, and programming the moving elements of the app. The final step would be to share it!
