Inspiration
When we talk about mental health, we're talking about overall well-being. Good mental health is not only key to feeling good, but it also affects our physical health, energy, and activity levels. It influences our vitality, our relationships with others, and first, with ourselves, our desire to live. That's why it's so important to maintain good mental health and to pay attention to any signs of distress. Here are some fast statistics: according to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness https://www.nami.org/mhstats) 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness each year, 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year, 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year, 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24 Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14
The problem is HUGE. That is why it's a common goal to popularize self-care and attention to psychological well-being. Mental support should be widespread and accessible to everyone, regardless of location, status, and age. Many people are embarrassed or afraid to ask for help, and some don't have financial resources. We believe that this should not be an obstacle. Our main goal is to make mental healthcare widespread and accessible.
What it does
Our solution harnesses the power of technology to address the global mental health crisis by providing a comprehensive platform for mental health care and support. By leveraging AI, maps, telemedicine, and online leisure, we are breaking down barriers to access and making it easier for people, especially those in remote areas, to get the help they need.
Our platform integrates user data and creates a single holistic database, enabling mental health professionals to provide personalized care and support to those who need it most, improving the lives of millions worldwide.
How we built it
We created our PWA-based service to quickly test our hypotheses and develop a fully functional mobile app. Our frontend and backend are written in Next.js and deployed on Vercel. We use Supabase in combination with Prisma ORM and Next.js Api Functions to handle the backend and data.
We built a chatbot based on the OpenAI GPT API with custom prompts that answer questions most accurately. We also use Google Maps API to display points and Postgis to build points and routes .
One of our features is the LLM model, which allows us to answer questions about patients' problems and diagnoses accurately and quickly and make recommendations through customized prompts.
Challenges we ran into
In the limited time of the hackathon, we faced several challenges that ended up helping us delve deeper into the topic to find a solution, as well as causing us to work better on the concept itself and its details. One of these challenges was exploring the Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and developing the concept of creating an alternative transparent system to ensure data protection.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We enjoy even small steps, so we're really proud that within a couple of days of the hackathon, we were able to come together and work on the chosen topic qualitatively. Nevertheless, the cohesion of the team is one of the achievements that we are proud of at this hackathon. We are proud that we were able to take a step forward to the impact of this undoubtedly important and more relevant than ever
What we learned
During those couple of days of the Hackathon, we researched and analyzed Healthcare and its digitalization aspects weaknesses, AI integration, and EHRs (Electronic Health Records) which even in their first stages gave us great insight into the topic. We realized that the problem we decided to solve within the TreeHacks turned out to be even bigger and more to be solved than we had imagined. It was a great valuable experience of learning a lot through TreeHacks sponsors sessions, and dialogs with founders helped us learn the specifics of integrating AI into our application.
What's next for CheckApp
We want to develop CheckApp into a platform designed to enhance the security, accessibility, and reliability of healthcare services. Our goal is to create a digital medical profile for each patient, which will allow them to own and control their data and grant access to the necessary doctors and organizations.
We believe patients should have a clear understanding of which of their data is being utilized and have access to transparent service costs. To facilitate this, we will develop a mobile app for patients and a platform for organizations to communicate more easily. Patients will have the ability to grant access to their data, allowing various organizations such as emergency responders, therapists, and doctors to review or modify their information.
Additionally, patients will be able to make appointments and receive medical services through the mobile app. For organizations, we will provide a centralized patient knowledge base, resulting in faster and more convenient service delivery.
