3. Problem Statement
Every year, 1.3 billion dollars get stolen every year using check fraud, with small businesses and senior citizens often being the most affected by these scams. Usually, there is no way for anyone to know if a check is fraudulent or not before depositing it, which can lead to devastating financial losses and retirement funds being emptied after the check gets bounced.
Many victims often do not realize a check is fraudulent until after they have deposited it, by which point the financial damage may already be done. Small businesses, nonprofits, and senior citizens are particularly vulnerable because they frequently rely on paper checks and may have limited resources to recover lost funds. Because of these problems, there is a clear need for a simple, accessible tool that helps users identify obvious warning signs before they deposit a check, and help stop check fraud.
4. Proposed Solution
Check4Real is a browser-based verification tool that helps users evaluate the legitimacy of a check before depositing it. Users enter the routing number printed on their check along with the name of the issuing bank. The system validates the routing number, cross-references it with official Federal Reserve routing data, and compares the entered bank information against the expected institution. Based on these verifications, the application assesses check's credibility and alerts users to any indications of fraud.
5. Innovation & Uniqueness
Check4real is unique because instead of detecting fraud after a check has already been deposited, it focuses on early intervention by giving users access to verification tools before they take financial action. Also, because it is web-based, users do not need to install software or create an account, making the tool easy to use for anyone with an internet connection.

7. Project Presentation
Target Users:
- Individual consumers
- Senior citizens
- Small business owners
- Nonprofit organizations
- People who regularly deposit/use paper checks
Implementation Process: I designed Check4Real as a web application using React and TypeScript, and deployed it on Vercel to improve accessibility and allow users to access the service from any device with a web browser. The application verifies user's routing numbers against official Federal Reserve routing data while comparing the provided bank name with the expected institution. After completing these checks, the system generates a trust assessment and highlights any inconsistencies that may indicate fraud.
Resources Required:
- Official routing number database
- Web hosting and cloud deployment
- Ongoing database updates
- Continued testing and security improvements
The main challenges affecting Check4Real are:
- Keeping routing databases updated and current as banking information changes
- Preventing false positives as much as possible while still identifying suspicious checks
Expected Outcomes: Check4Real aims to reduce financial losses by helping users identify suspicious checks before depositing them. By providing an easy-to-use verification tool, the project promotes greater financial helps to combat check fraud.
