About
A talented, qualified, engaged, and diverse workforce is at the heart of America’s health care system. However, hospitals and health systems now face mounting and critical staffing shortages that could jeopardize access to care in the communities they serve. AHA data analysis shows there will be a shortage of up to 3.2 million health care workers by 2026. After reaching out to a handful of healthcare professionals we narrowed down one key characteristic: communication. Checkup is the next healthcare productivity app aimed to revolutionize how we think about the administration and healthcare paradigm. With a simple UI, healthcare staff can get direct access to patient care information as well as important vital signs. Our chat feature will enable healthcare workers to maximize personalized care without disrupting their ongoing tasks. Auto balancing patients between nurses in a particular unit helps decrease burnout which was one of the biggest pain points we researched. After a hectic few years, it's time to checkout Checkup and put the focus back on healthcare workers.
How we built it
We utilized React Native and Python to create a quick MVP. In the backend we took a dependency on Twilio's SMS service in order to do patient - healthcare communication.
Challenges we ran into
Getting user stories in such a short time. With the critical deadline it was hard to really identify the issues in an industry we were all not familiar with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned a lot of new technologies like using Twilio to create messaging events, creating dev environments and running our application with Docker, and building os agnostic UI with React Native. Being exposed to new technologies and producing an MVP for our first hackathon has been a lot of fun.
What we learned
Scope… Scope…. Scope… it's important to keep reminding yourself of the core values of the MVP. When you’re dealing with new technologies it can be hard to keep focus aligned, but we learned with such a short time limit its important to fail fast and keep things simple.
What's next for Check UP
We are hope to bring in a variety of healthcare professionals and gaining more insights into the day-to-day struggles they face. Adding technologies like NFC tags to check in patients to create a more advanced scheduling application. We also plan on implementing push notifications to better notify workers of critical information.
