Inspiration

The global crisis related to the CoronaVirus pandemic demands for an instrument capable of fast and reliable detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Available solutions require either specialized personnel or long execution times and are usually carried out by means of expensive instrumentation. Therefore, widespread access to diagnostic tools is remarkably limited.

To address these constraints, we propose a portable, fast, and low-cost device to achieve a reliable diagnosis within minutes and no need for trained personnel.

What it does

Starting from a saliva sample, our solution can detect the presence of virus particles by means of a microfluidic system and an engineered optical detection.

Our Viruscope is composed by two modules:

  1. a disposable cartridge, providing automatic sample handling, labelling and filtering;

  2. an analysing unit, which detects the potential presence of virus particles by means of a fluorescence assay.

What's next

We have a thorough knowledge of everything that belongs to optics, optical design and optical detection. We also have knowledge related to microfabrication and to the design of microfluidic chips.

During the Hackaton we will strengthen our project, trying to broaden our team with experts having specific skills related to product design and immunochemistry.
