Inspiration

In Japan, the TOEIC test plays an essential role both in professional advancement and academic achievement.
For many working professionals, a high TOEIC score is a key factor in promotion and career growth. Similarly, for university and high school students, TOEIC results are often required for admission, exchange programs, or job hunting.
However, despite its importance, TOEIC preparation can be repetitive, time-consuming, and lacks personalized feedback. Many learners struggle to maintain motivation or identify their weak areas.

ChatTOEIC was created to solve these issues by providing an AI-powered, interactive, and personalized learning experience that adapts to each user’s skill level and progress.

What it does

ChatTOEIC is an AI-based TOEIC learning platform built using Google Chrome’s Built-in AI features.
It provides four main functions: Practice, Review, Translation, and Vocabulary Book.

Practice: Users can select question types, number of questions, and difficulty levels. Based on these preferences, Gemini AI generates TOEIC-style questions that match the official test’s design philosophy. After completion, users receive automatic scoring and answer explanations.
Review: All past practice questions are stored in the Review section. Users can revisit them, analyze mistakes, and discuss questions directly with a Google Built-in AI Teacher, allowing deeper understanding through dialogue-based feedback.
Translation: When users highlight a word in the Review interface, two options appear — “Translate” and “Add to Vocabulary.” The Translate function uses Built-in AI to provide context-aware translations that reflect the specific meaning of the word within the sentence.
Vocabulary Book: When users select “Add to Vocabulary,” the AI adds detailed definitions and generates example sentences automatically. The system then manages these entries and reminds users to review them later, following the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve to optimize memory retention.

How we built it

ChatTOEIC was developed using Google Chrome’s Built-in AI, Gemini API, and modern web technologies such as TypeScript,JavaScript,HTML and Postgresql.
The interface design emphasizes clarity and motivation, providing learners with a smooth and engaging experience on both desktop and mobile browsers.

Challenges we ran into

We spent significant effort ensuring that Gemini AI could accurately generate TOEIC-style questions that align with the official test’s structure and logic. We also worked on integrating real-time translation and vocabulary tracking while maintaining smooth performance and intuitive UX.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a Chrome-based AI learning environment that can dynamically generate, evaluate, and explain TOEIC-style content.
Our platform bridges AI and education in a way that supports continuous motivation and measurable progress for learners in Japan and beyond.

What we learned

We learned how powerful Chrome’s Built-in AI can be when applied to education — especially when combined with structured learning systems and personalized feedback loops.
The integration of AI-driven conversation and adaptive review greatly improves engagement and retention.
