Inspiration
There I was - entering my credit card information to subscribe for another AI app. "My fiance isn't going to be happy about this" I thought to myself. Grok 4 had just been announced and the internet was abuzz with hype around x.ai's latest model.
I was already paying at least $60/month on AI apps. I subscribed to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. I'm an AI power user and I want to have the latest and greatest models at my fingertips at any given moment. I knew I wasn't alone. I was already using Cursor for code and it allowed me to flip between models or automatically be routed. Online, research showed me that freelancers, writers, and students were using different models and doing comparisons or chaining them together.
Then it hit me - why cant I have a single app that does all this? What if I took what I loved the most from each of these titans and bundled it together in one app? That's how ChatThat was born.
What it does
ChatThat is a productivity app that gives users instant access to the latest top AI models — like GPT-5, Grok 4, Claude, and Gemini — as soon as they’re available, all under one simple subscription.
It gives users access to the most powerful AI tools for writing and creating content. We have a library full of sample prompts, image generation, image transformation, and a model picker. The backend is optimized for speed and performance so the experience is as buttery smooth and gets you the results you need quickly.
How we built it
The app is an expo / React Native iOS app frontend and a python Flask backend. We finely-tuned integrations on the backend with each major AI LLM (GPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini).
I do a lot of full-stack web react with python but this was my first published mobile app so I did lots of vibe coding and learning with cursor and other AI models along the way. I started dog fooding and using my own app along the way to help with coding as well.
Challenges we ran into
Initial market to focus on:
- We launched Sept 18 on the iOS app store and began running ads the next day. The top of the funnel is working: we're getting impressions and brining people to our app store page but we have a low conversion rate on the app store page. We believe this is because our marketing is broad and the messaging isn't specific. We're refining the focus to be ICP of freelancers / content creators who derive lots of immediate value from model switching and chaining.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Launched iOS app on Sept 18. My first mobile app every launched to the app store
- Deep integration with RevenueCat and Superwall to optimize onboarding and paywall. Integrating this with our MMP (Appsflyer) and Meta ads so we can optimize on the RC free_trial event
- Hired a growth pro and immediately began testing ads and ad creative to drive growth
- 157 downloads
- Seven 5-star reviews
- Awesome features that were fun to work on
What we learned
- Marketing and growth is hard. While we can solve many problems for many different users, we need to narrow the focus to get a beach head and win in an a niche that's willing to adopt this early.
- The world of ad analytics is complicated. That took a lot more time to develop than I had anticipated. Ex: SKAN, appsflyer events, connecting with RC + Meta, etc.
