Inspiration

I’ve always found it interesting how much you can understand about a relationship just from the way two people text. Things like who starts conversations, who replies faster, when you talk the most, and how the conversation changes over time. I wanted to build something that could show these insights, but I also didnt like the idea of uploading someones private conversations to a server. That’s what led me to build Chatlas.

What it does

Chatlas lets you import a conversation from whatsApp, instagram, snapchat or imessage and see different insights about it. It can show things like message counts, who starts conversations, average reply times, active hours, streaks, longest conversations, and other patterns in the chat. And everything is done locally.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was handling all the different chat formats and edge cases. Large conversations, different timestamps, media messages, deleted messages, and different export structures all needed to be handled properly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m also happy that we were able to build the core experience around keeping private. This is really cool as it can creates and display tons of long relation memories of couples, families, group charts.

What we learned

I learned that working with real-world data is much messier than it looks. A lot of the work went into handling small edge cases that you don't think about initially. I also learned that privacy has to be considered while building the product, not added at the end. Different platforms (like Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp) have their different export output and each has to be configured in its own way so that it works perfectly as per that.

What's next for Chatlas

I want to make Chatlas much deeper than just basic statistics. More platforms, better conversation insights, timelines, and more interesting ways to understand how conversations change over time are some of the things I want to work on next. I also want to add features like creating a leaderboard for all of the uploaded chats of different user comparing by number of messages and other stuff. So this can increase the retention and usage of the app.
