Inspiration
ChatGPT is useful for brainstorming, drafting, research, and daily work—but a busy sidebar quickly becomes hard to manage. Removing old conversations one by one takes time, while broad automation or browser-console scripts can be risky when a deletion is permanent.
We built ChatSweep to make ChatGPT cleanup more deliberate: select the chats already visible in the sidebar, review the batch, and decide whether to delete or archive them.
What it does
ChatSweep is a Chrome extension for selectively managing multiple ChatGPT conversations.
It adds selection controls beside chats already loaded in the ChatGPT sidebar. Users can review a batch and then delete or archive selected conversations. The current open conversation is protected from selection.
The extension is intentionally conservative:
- It works only with chats already loaded in the ChatGPT sidebar.
- It does not automatically fetch a user’s entire chat history.
- It requires a review and confirmation step before destructive actions.
- Users stay on the active ChatGPT page while a cleanup runs.
- If a required ChatGPT control or result cannot be verified, the task pauses or stops instead of guessing.
ChatSweep also includes an account and entitlement system for Free, Pro, and Lifetime access. The Free plan supports one batch deletion per day with up to 10 chats per batch. Paid access adds larger cleanup capacity and bulk archive.
How I built it
The extension is built for Chrome Manifest V3 and uses a content-script-based workflow that interacts only with the ChatGPT sidebar currently available in the browser. The UI focuses on selection, review, explicit confirmation, progress feedback, and safe stopping conditions.
The website provides a multilingual product experience, account access, checkout, plan synchronization, support contact details, privacy information, and SEO-focused public pages. It uses a React and TypeScript frontend with a server-side account, payment, and entitlement layer.
Paid access is verified through the account system rather than trusting browser storage or URL parameters. This keeps website purchases and extension access synchronized while reducing the risk of accidental entitlement changes.
Challenges I ran into
The largest challenge was building around a fast-changing web interface without treating the page structure as permanently stable. ChatGPT can update its sidebar, controls, labels, and rendering behavior at any time.
To reduce the impact of those changes, ChatSweep checks for the controls it needs before acting. It avoids retrying an uncertain destructive action and stops when it cannot confirm the expected state.
Another challenge was making bulk cleanup useful without making it reckless. Deleting chats is permanent, so the product needed clear selection states, current-chat protection, confirmation steps, visible progress, and foreground-use guidance.
Supporting multiple languages, right-to-left layouts, website accounts, subscription plans, and extension entitlement sync added another layer of complexity.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I’m proud that ChatSweep is designed around cautious bulk actions rather than promising unrealistic one-click automation.
The project includes:
- A Chrome Web Store–published extension.
- Selective batch deletion and archive workflows for loaded sidebar chats.
- Current-chat protection and explicit confirmation before deletion.
- Safe pause and stop behavior when the interface cannot be verified.
- A multilingual website and extension experience, including RTL support.
- Website login, account management, payment plans, and verified entitlement synchronization.
- A public help and privacy experience that clearly explains product limits.
What I learned
This project reinforced that browser extensions built around third-party interfaces need graceful degradation. A tool should not keep clicking when the page changes or when the result is unclear.
I also learned that safety is not only a warning message. It has to be part of the workflow: protect the current chat, require review, confirm before deleting, show progress, and stop instead of retrying an uncertain action.
Finally, building the website and extension together showed the importance of keeping account access, billing, privacy, localization, and product behavior consistent across every user touchpoint.
What's next for ChatSweep
Next, we plan to keep improving compatibility checks as ChatGPT evolves, refine large-sidebar selection workflows, expand helpful localized content, and make cleanup guidance easier to understand before users take a permanent action.
We will continue to keep the product focused on selective cleanup: helping users remove clutter while keeping control over the conversations that matter.
