Inspiration
What if Twitch viewers could do more than watch a game? What if they could actually build its world, create its characters, and decide its fate?
That question inspired ChatForge — Valley of Echoes, an interactive fantasy experience where Twitch chat becomes a collaborative storytelling engine.
Instead of simply responding to commands, ChatForge transforms the creativity of a live audience into a shared, evolving world.
Our vision: the streamer directs the story, but the community writes the legend.
What it does
ChatForge transforms Twitch chat into a living fantasy world.
Viewers can submit ideas using !forge, creating characters, magical items, dangers, and story events through natural language.
OpenAI interprets each idea and generates a structured entity. The streamer reviews it in a private Director's Cut dashboard, where creations can be approved or rejected before appearing on the map.
Approved creations appear on the Valley of Echoes overlay in real time.
The experience also includes a cooperative game mode called Save the Valley.
When a crisis strikes, viewers receive two possible solutions and have 60 seconds to vote using !vote 1 or !vote 2.
Their collective decision shapes the story and influences the world's Chaos Level.
Contributors earn points for approved creations, adding recognition and friendly competition to collaborative storytelling.
How we built it
ChatForge combines the Twitch API and EventSub with a TypeScript/Node.js backend, OpenAI-powered entity generation, Zod validation, and a real-time browser overlay compatible with OBS.
OpenAI Codex supported the development workflow, helping turn ideas into implementation, iterate on the cooperative mechanics, troubleshoot integration problems, and develop automated tests.
The backend uses a deterministic state system to manage world events, voting, scores, and chaos.
A moderation layer ensures that AI-generated creations are validated and approved by the streamer before becoming part of the shared world.
The visual experience uses a cinematic fantasy map, with interactive entities and live updates delivered to the overlay.
Challenges we faced
One of our biggest challenges was connecting live Twitch interactions with AI-generated content while keeping the experience predictable and safe.
We needed to prevent duplicate creations, reject invalid inputs, manage voting fairly, and maintain consistency when viewers reconnected.
Another challenge was making cooperative voting understandable to viewers watching a live stream.
We addressed these problems through structured validation, streamer-controlled moderation, deterministic state updates, and automated testing.
Accomplishments
We built and tested a working end-to-end experience:
- Live Twitch chat integration through EventSub
- AI-powered entity generation from natural language
- Streamer approval and moderation
- Real-time fantasy map updates
- Cooperative crisis voting
- Chaos Level and contributor scoring
- OBS-compatible overlay
The project passed 26 automated tests, along with TypeScript validation, and we successfully connected the application to a live Twitch channel.
What we learned
Building ChatForge demonstrated how AI can enable new forms of audience participation rather than simply automate existing interactions.
We also learned the importance of combining generative AI with deterministic game rules and human moderation.
The result is an experience where creativity remains open-ended, but every published change stays under the streamer's control.
What's next
Our next goal is to make ChatForge easier for other streamers to use, improve the voting experience, and expand the storytelling possibilities.
Future versions could introduce persistent worlds, additional cooperative adventures, and richer AI-driven narrative consequences.
ChatForge is more than a Twitch bot. It's an experiment in turning a live community into the creators of its own shared adventure.
