Inspiration

What if Twitch chat could become a musical instrument? We built ChatChorus to turn audience participation into a live performance, where viewers create the soundtrack together with the streamer.

What it does

ChatChorus transforms real Twitch chat messages into generative music and reactive visuals.

Streamers connect their Twitch account and add a personal Browser Source to OBS. Every incoming chat message can influence the music and visuals.

Key features:

  • Real Twitch OAuth and EventSub integration
  • Live chat-driven music using Web Audio
  • Volume, mood, timbre, and scene controls
  • Animated visuals and transparent OBS overlays
  • Secure sessions, reconnect, logout, and key rotation
  • Interactive demo without Twitch login

How we built it

We used OpenAI Codex throughout development, from architecture and coding to debugging, testing, and deployment.

Built with TypeScript, JavaScript, Twitch API, Web Audio API, Cloudflare Pages, Workers, Durable Objects, and OBS Browser Source.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting real Twitch events to responsive audio, handling browser autoplay restrictions, making sound work inside OBS, and securing individual streamer sessions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Deployed a working public application.
  • Verified real Twitch chat triggering audible music.
  • Confirmed reactive visuals and audio in OBS.
  • Tested scene switching, reconnect, and key rotation.
  • Passed 21 automated tests and security checks.

What we learned

Reliable live experiences require careful event handling, audio permissions, security, and production testing. Codex helped us develop and validate the system iteratively.

What's next for ChatChorus

Expand testing with multiple independent streamers, add richer musical interactions, and improve customization.
