Inspiration

The idea behind ChatBook was born out of a desire to make reading more engaging and enriching. We were inspired by how conversational AI could support readers in developing a deeper understanding of books, not by replacing reading, but by enhancing it. With the ability to ask questions, explore context, and discuss key ideas interactively, ChatBook encourages active reading and critical thinking. It’s designed to support students, casual readers, and lifelong learners who want to grasp content more thoroughly and stay motivated throughout their reading journey.

What it does

ChatBook is a concept for a platform where users can pick a book and interact with it through a chatbot. The AI can summarize chapters, explain complex ideas, or answer questions about the book's content. Some books are free to explore, while premium or copyrighted books are locked behind a paywall, encouraging ethical access and future collaboration with publishers or authors.

How we built it

We designed the prototype using Figma to visualize the user journey, interface, and overall flow. To further shape the concept, we collaborated with our teammates and used tools like ChatGPT and Wix AI to support our brainstorming process. These AI tools helped us explore possibilities.

Challenges we ran into

A key challenge we faced was navigating the issue of copyright. Since many books are protected content, we couldn't just use them freely in our demo or concept. This raised important legal and ethical questions about fair use, licensing, and monetization. It pushed us to think deeper about how to bring value while respecting intellectual property, possibly through licensing deals, previews, or content partnerships.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to take a bold idea from concept to a functional and well-designed prototype in a short time. Despite being early-stage, the project touches on real-world concerns and offers a creative solution to a common learning barrier.

What we learned

We learned that designing a digital product isn’t just about creating something that works, it’s about creating something responsible. Copyright laws, user experience, and content sourcing all go hand-in-hand. We also gained experience with prototyping tools and improved our understanding of how conversational AI could be applied in an educational context.

What's next for ChatBook

We plan to start by building the core conversational model using AI, ensuring it can understand and respond to book content meaningfully. Once the model is solid, we’ll develop it into a mobile app to bring the experience to users. As a final step, we aim to seek partnerships with educational authors, publishers, and schools to legally and ethically feature their books on the platform. Our long-term vision is to offer a smarter, more engaging way to experience books by talking to them.
