Watching alone on Fire TV feels isolating. I wanted to make TV social again - where you can react, chat, and laugh together even if you're in different homes. Like a real living room, but virtual. That's Chat Zone.

What it does

Chat Zone is a Fire TV web app that adds a social layer to streaming:

  • Live Chat Rooms for any show, movie, or sports match
  • Watch Party Rooms - create private rooms with friends, synced playback
  • Live Reactions - emoji, polls, and quick reactions
  • Profiles & Friends - add friends, see what they're watching

How we built it

  • Fire TV Web App SDK (HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
  • Firebase for real-time chat and presence
  • Hosted on Amazon S3
  • Designed for Fire TV remote navigation (D-pad friendly UI)

Challenges we ran into

Making chat readable on TV from 10 feet away, handling remote control input instead of touch, and keeping real-time chat fast on Fire TV hardware.

Accomplishments

Working chat rooms on Fire TV, watch party creation flow, and a clean 10-foot UI that judges can actually use.

What we learned

Building for TV is different than mobile - bigger text, simpler navigation, and speed matters. Also how powerful Fire TV Web Apps are.

What's next

Add Alexa+ voice: "Alexa, join my friends watch party" and Ring integration to auto-pause chat when someone is at the door.
