Inspiration

We wanted Twitch viewers to contribute more than a majority vote. Scouts, Scribes and Engineers each hold a piece of an observatory escape puzzle. An explicitly labelled solo expedition lets one real Twitch account explore the room by switching stations manually.

What it does

Chat commands recover three clues, align an orbit sequence and charge the gate. Cooperative mode assigns locked roles to separate participants. Solo mode preserves earned clues and station votes as one player changes roles. The final charge window is 12 seconds in cooperative mode and 30 seconds in solo mode. Streamers can start, pause and reset; a spectator overlay displays progress and next actions.

How we built it with Codex

Codex helped implement the deterministic JavaScript game engine, original CSS artwork, Node.js controller, spectator HUD, persistence and Twitch EventSub WebSocket adapter. We used Codex to investigate duplicate delivery, stale asynchronous callbacks, command timing and UI recovery after interrupted polling. Automated regression tests and independent review informed the corrections. The reviewed suite passes 87 tests. Main build session: 01a184e8-eea2-7126-96ec-b90e053af0d1.

Twitch integration and evidence

The app receives actual channel.chat.message EventSub events with the read-only user:read:chat permission. The video shows genuine nextarra chat messages alongside game responses, clue recovery, votes, charges and solo victory, followed by the original Codex planning and historical test conversation. The recorded run accepted all 16 commands with zero observed duplicates or rejections. It uses one real account switching roles, not simulated participants. The video is edited for pacing; no camera or broadcast was used.

Challenges and lessons

Reliable gameplay requires clear behavior when delivery is duplicated, delayed or disconnected. We tested reset boundaries, stale callbacks and recovery paths, and made the next action visible in the game. Solo play improves accessibility for judges while preserving the original cooperative rules.

Current limits

Full three-account live cooperative victory, live connection resilience and OBS composition remain unverified. Automated tests and fixture replays are labelled separately and are not evidence of live multiplayer success. The project runs locally with the repository setup instructions; it is not a hosted Twitch-scale service. Historical test counts in the Codex footage describe an earlier build stage.

Next steps

More original rooms, usability testing with real streaming communities, and broader live cooperative and resilience testing.
