About The Project — REC: Influencer Life

Inspiration

The idea started with a question that every teenager already knows the answer to, even if they can't articulate it: do you chase the viral moment, or do you build something real? That tension between short-term views and long-term audience loyalty is something people live with every day on TikTok and YouTube. It felt like a game mechanic hiding in plain sight.

I was playing idle sims like Hay Day and My Café and enjoying the progression loops, but I kept wishing my decisions actually mattered beyond "did I remember to log in today." The numbers went up, but I never felt like I was choosing how they went up. REC was designed for that gap: what if a progression sim had a real strategic question at the center of every session?

The social layer came from watching how people naturally cluster around trending content in real life. Nobody plans a collaboration on TikTok by sending a formal invitation. Two creators show up at the same spot, film the same thing, and both benefit. That accidental cooperation became Collab Mode: no menus, no friend requests, just a bonus for being in the same place at the same time.

What it does

REC: Influencer Life is a third-person social simulation game where you play as a content creator building a channel from nothing. You walk through a shared living city, capture footage at content hotspots, edit it in your studio, and publish it to Glimpse, a fictional social platform.

The core strategic decision is the Reach/Trust toggle. Publish in Reach Mode and you chase visibility and cash. Publish in Trust Mode and you sacrifice short-term income to build subscriber loyalty, which unlocks sponsorship deals and passive income. You can switch freely, but every switch reshapes what the next session is worth.

Hotspots spawn in niche-tagged zones (Food, Music, Travel). Matching your niche earns Trust. Going off-niche still earns Reach but no Trust. Two players at the same hotspot trigger Collab Mode automatically, giving everyone +7.5% bonus footage per person present.

Sessions run 5 to 15 minutes. The game is built to be something you return to, not something you sink into.

How we built it

Documentation-first, same approach as the other projects. The full GDD was written before prototyping, describing every system at implementation-ready depth. The goal was to catch design contradictions on paper rather than in code.

The build had three critical design phases:

  1. Core loop pacing — a full Capture → Edit → Publish cycle had to feel complete in under two minutes. If any phase dragged, the mobile session model breaks. Edit phase was the bottleneck; we solved it by making early-game editing manual (giving automation unlocks real value later).
  2. Reach/Trust economy balancing — Trust never drops, only pauses. That single rule means going off-niche is never punished, just unrewarded in one dimension. Getting that failure mode right (standing still vs losing ground) took several iterations.
  3. Prestige system design — the moment where you reset cash, gear, and followers but keep your studio and skill tree progress. The emotional weight of that choice had to feel like a genuine crossroads, not a punishment.

Challenges we ran into

Making the Reach/Trust choice feel real. Early versions made Trust so slow that nobody used it. Current design ties Trust to sponsorship multipliers and gear-tier unlocks, so ignoring it has visible long-term cost. The choice now feels like genuine strategy, not a trap with a correct answer.

Preventing the idle trap. The game looks like an idle sim on the surface: hold a button, numbers go up. The design challenge was making where you hold the button matter more than how long you hold it. Niche-matched hotspots, Collab Mode bonuses, and trending niche rotations solved this. Standing in the wrong place still earns something, standing in the right place earns meaningfully more.

Prestige anxiety. The first time a player hits the prestige option, they see "reset everything." That's terrifying. The solution: studio decoration and Prestige Skill Tree progress persist through resets. There's always something that's still yours on the other side. The reset feels like a strategic choice, not a loss.

Collab Mode without social friction. We needed multiplayer cooperation that didn't require friend lists, invitations, or voice chat. The auto-triggering proximity bonus solved it. Two strangers chasing the same trending hotspot accidentally become collaborators. The +7.5% per person stacking bonus is strong enough to notice but never mandatory.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The Reach/Trust duality as a single toggle that reframes every session. Same loop, same city, same hotspots, completely different optimization target depending on which mode you're in. One mechanic creates two distinct play styles without adding any complexity to the interface.

Collab Mode as emergent social design. No menus, no invitations, no friend requests. Just a bonus for physical proximity. The game's most organic social moments cost nothing to trigger and require nothing to participate in. Players coordinate naturally because the city makes cooperation the path of least resistance.

Trust never drops. That one rule makes the Reach/Trust decision feel safe to experiment with. You're never punished for trying something different, you just don't progress in one direction while you're pushing the other. Gentle failure modes produce braver players.

The Payout Card as a ritual. Every publish ends with an animated card showing cash earned, Reach gained, Trust accumulated, streak multiplier applied. It's the same card every time. It never stops feeling good. The numbers going up is the most reliable dopamine hit in the game, and it's earned, not given.

What we learned

Short sessions need complete arcs. A 5-minute session that ends mid-cycle feels interrupted. A 5-minute session that ends after a full Capture → Edit → Publish feels complete. The difference is structural, not durational. Every loop has to close cleanly within the session window.

Idle mechanics earn their value through contrast. Making the edit phase manual early on means the automation unlocks in the Prestige Skill Tree feel genuinely earned. If editing was always automatic, the upgrade would mean nothing. Friction early creates satisfaction later.

Retention hooks should feel unfinished, not urgent. At the end of any session, the player can see: an incomplete daily quest, a streak about to tier up, a gear upgrade two posts away. None of these demand immediate action. All of them feel like open loops. Open loops pull people back more reliably than countdown timers.

Social play scales when it's invisible. The moment you add a "Collaborate" button, some players feel obligated and others feel excluded. When collaboration is just a proximity bonus that happens automatically, everyone participates without anyone feeling pressured. The best social features are the ones players don't notice as features.

What's next for REC: Influencer Life

New City Districts — an Arts Quarter, a Harbour, a Night Market, each skewed toward specific niches with different hotspot density and Trust multiplier profiles. The Harbour spawns Travel and Food hotspots at high density but low Trust value. The Arts Quarter spawns rare hotspots with disproportionate Trust payoff.

Seasonal Niche Events — temporary niche variants tied to real-world calendar moments: a Summer Festival Food Niche with doubled Trust multipliers, a Gaming Expo event with exclusive sponsorship deals. Designed to reward engagement without punishing absence.

Full Glimpse Social Feed — a scrollable in-game feed showing posts from other players and NPC creators, with likes, comments, and collab invite mechanics. Transforms the Glimpse profile from a stats screen into an actual social object.

Studio Cosmetics System — lighting setups, greenscreens, trophy shelves with earned milestones, furniture with minor passive bonuses. The studio is the one thing that persists through prestige. Making it a meaningful canvas for self-expression increases the emotional weight of that permanence.
