Inspiration

After skimming through the topics, we recognized the significant role charities play in improving the world. However, there are so many charities out there, how would we know which charities yield in the greatest impact relative to the donated amount? As a team, we decided to focus our generative AI efforts on the summarization and analysis aspects of the project. With this goal in mind, we initiated the development of CharityChoice.ai with the aim of aiding individuals in making more informed decisions regarding the charities that aligns with their interests and beliefs.

What it does

CharityChoice.ai takes in the charity an user inputs and provides a summarized analysis of the charity from various aspects. We decided to include the charity's primary mission, its overall public perception, its level of financial transparency, and most importantly, the most likely breakdown of the donation. The breakdown includes information on how much of the donated funds are directly allocated to the cause versus any incurred transit and service fees.

How we built it

In the the front-end development, we used HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Python Flask to enhance the user experience. Additionally, we used Vertex.ai for both the generative AI functionality as well as the backend infrastructure of the project.

Challenges we ran into

As we are relatively new to the idea of AI, particularly generative AI, it took us some time to settle on a topic that we all agreed upon. We were initially uncertain about how and where we would implement the generative AI aspect into our project, however, as we pushed forward, this issue began to resolve. Additionally, grappling with the vastness of the AI landscape presented challenges in finding a starting point, leading to some initial delays as we navigated our way forward.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite encountering numerous challenges and issues throughout the hackathon, we managed to successfully complete and implement the API within 24 hours. That is pretty impressive and speaks to our team's dedication and resilience!

What we learned

As newcomers into the AI/ML field, this hackathon was an eye-opener for all of us. We gained invaluable hands-on experience in navigating the complexities of AI implementation, problem-solving under pressure, and the importance of effective team collaboration. Moreover, we discovered the power of perseverance and adaptability in overcoming unexpected challenges. This experience has sparked our curiosity and enthusiasm to delve deeper into the world of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

What's next for CharityChoice.ai

CharityChoice.ai has only begun to ignite change. We aspire to further raise awareness regarding the diverse array of charities and their respective impacts, empowering users to make informed choices. Our vision is to enhance and broaden the capabilities of CharityChoice.ai to provide even more comprehensive results in the future.
