Inspiration
While walking around Manhattan and looking for inspiration for this hackathon, we came across a Goodwill. A discussion about how Goodwill wasn't 100% charitable with their clothes donations lead to our app idea.
What it does
Charitee is a peer-to-peer used online clothing store that allows users (donators) to turn their old clothes into cash to donate to a reputable charity of their choosing. It also allows users (buyers) to update their wardrobe while contributing to a good cause. Our platform removes the need for a middle-man such as goodwill. One side is happy to donate their clothes, the other side is happy to update theirs and give money to a charity.
How we built it
We used Vanilla JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Firebase for backend, database, and user authentication. Git/VSCode were used for workflow and Images were taken from a free image site.
Challenges we ran into
The largest challenge was easily the time constraint. We did not have prior hackathon experience and this project was easily one of the largest ones we have worked on. As a team of two, it was difficult to complete all the necessary tasks within the time limit.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
Throughout the charitee development process, we ran into a lot of snags. Some were very difficult to work through, but through perseverance we got past them all. More than anything, we learned how to work through a high-stakes development environment, with a fast-approaching deadline, and how to use documentation to solve any issue we had. On a more technical note however, we learned a lot about Firebase and its various database storage schemas, along with generating dynamic HTML on the fly using APIs and JS
What's next for Charitee
Unfortunately, 48 hours was not enough to impliement a fully functional e-commerce system. We plan to impliment it in the near future, but for now, our app simply connects two users together. One that wants to donate their old clothes, and one that wants to update their wardrobe while supporting a good cause. Guranteed child labor free, because its somebody's old clothes.
