Inspiration
I built Chargd because freelancers, contractors, and small businesses should not have to pay a monthly fee simply to create and send professional invoices.
Most invoicing platforms require an account, store sensitive business information on external servers, and charge subscriptions that become increasingly expensive over time.
The long-term cost of subscription software can be represented as:
Total Cost=Monthly Fee×Number of Months
Chargd takes a different approach:
Total Cost=One-Time Purchase
My goal was to create a fast, private, and professional invoicing application that users could purchase once and own forever.
One-time purchase. No subscription. No ads. Your data stays on your Mac.
What Chargd Does
Chargd is a native macOS application for managing the complete invoicing workflow.
Quotes and Invoices Create professional quotes and invoices Convert an accepted quote into an invoice in one tap Choose from 14 customizable PDF templates Add a business logo and brand colours Track sent, viewed, paid, and overdue documents Create documents in 17 supported currencies Clients and Payments Manage unlimited clients View complete contact and billing histories Record and match payments to invoices Create credit memos for refunds and adjustments Generate recurring invoices for retainer clients Reporting and Workflow Review revenue and expense reports Visualise business performance with charts Manage opportunities through a sales-pipeline Kanban board Export financial data as CSV for accountants and bookkeepers Navigate quickly using a keyboard-first workflow How I Built It
I designed Chargd around a local-first architecture. Business information is stored directly on the user’s Mac, allowing the application to work without accounts, cloud storage, or an internet connection during everyday use.
The product was structured around several connected workflows:
Add or select a client. Create a quote or invoice. Add products, services, taxes, and discounts. Generate a branded PDF. Record and track payments. Review revenue and business reports.
Invoice totals are calculated consistently using:
Total=Subtotal+Tax−Discount
I focused heavily on creating a clean macOS experience that feels fast and familiar. The interface is designed to help users create a professional invoice in under a minute without navigating complicated accounting software.
Challenges I Faced Reliable PDF Generation
One of the most difficult challenges was generating professional financial documents of different lengths.
An invoice may contain 2 items or 100 items. The PDF system therefore needed to create additional pages automatically while ensuring that it did not:
Cut off line items Duplicate or lose information Split rows incorrectly Cover totals or footers Produce unnecessary blank pages Reduce the text to an unreadable size Keeping Advanced Features Simple
Chargd includes customizable templates, multiple currencies, recurring invoices, credit memos, reporting, payment tracking, and client histories.
The challenge was supporting these capabilities without making the application feel complicated. Every screen and interaction had to remain clear enough for someone who may not have accounting or technical experience.
Building for Privacy
A fully offline application requires a different approach from a conventional cloud product. The app needed to remain useful without relying on external servers, user accounts, or continuous internet access.
This also meant treating the user’s Mac as the primary and trusted location for their business data.
What I Learned
Building Chargd taught me that adding features is easier than making those features feel simple and dependable.
I learned more about:
Local-first software architecture Financial-document workflows Multi-page PDF generation Invoice and tax calculations Native desktop interface design Data privacy and offline storage Designing for non-technical business owners
Most importantly, I learned that software does not need a subscription or cloud account to provide lasting value.
The Result
Chargd gives freelancers, contractors, and small businesses the essential tools they need to manage quotes, invoices, clients, payments, and reports—without an ongoing subscription.
Whether the user is an electrician, photographer, consultant, designer, or small-business owner, Chargd helps them get paid without getting in their way.
Buy it once. Own it forever.
