Inspiration
Our inspiration derived from the fact that many of us have struggled with making financial decisions before and we learned through trial and error on the best practices within. We’ve been through so many mentors and found that it would be easier to try and test our knowledge against virtual money, while gamifying it in the process, to make a better educational tool.
What it does
EduLife is an MMORPG game that takes you through the ins and outs of our financial systems. Along the way, users learn about stocks, APR, Money Management, Credit Score, and Mortgage. You play as a character who is assigned a task throughout the game by talking to different NPC, completing them grants you money which can be used to purchase objects from the store. You can also take a loan from the bank with a good enough credit score, to buy a house. Each NPC will give you informative tips in their respective category.
How I built it
We used Cockroach Database to store all user specific values such as Credit Score, Balance, Loans, Inventory, and etc. Incorporated Flask to host local server in order for our front end Node.js.
Challenges I ran into
The set up process for the cockroach database was difficult in the start, but we persevered through installation. Working with our APIs, finding, hosting, and working with the open source game engine took a while to start due to versioning and dependency errors.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Our team is proud of learning some new skills, showing off our networking abilities, and working together to achieve something we never knew we were capable of.
What I learned
We learned how to use TypeScript, JPGJS, and CockroachDB, Vue.js, Node.js, Git, UI Design.
What's next for EduLife
- Larger database, and more activities.
- Ability to track the users carbon footprint
- In depth systems for the stock market.
- Increase/more the map size
