Inspiration

My wife is a semi-SAHM who has lots of responsibilities to get the kids to and from their after-school activities and constantly runs into other moms with the same problem. "How do I be two places at once?"

What it does

Set up your frequent locations, post requests for pickup and drop off, be seen by other people who have the same frequent locations or that you've saved to your preferred network

How we built it

Cloudflare manages DNS, WAF, and schema validation works. AWS is used for Auth, APIGW, and backend processing via lambdas with a mono dynamodb pattern. Revenuecat for the paywall/payment. Took about 30 hours a week for a month then about 14 days of app store setup to launch the app.

React native for the ios and android frontend. iOS is all we were able to fully publish in a month's time.

Challenges we ran into

I am not a mobile developer by trade so learning react native for this project to produce both an android and an iOS app was outside my normal wheelhouse.

I've never published an app so the storefront process was the longest part of the journey to ensure it met standards. Android will hopefully make it through it's review process in a few weeks time after i get the business EIN to set up google marketplace properly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm incredibly proud of the backend as the culmination of my 14 years of high-octane enterprise expertise. This is my first time putting all the pieces together on my own from start to finish and I'm so proud of the efficiency of the backend, how little it costs to host, and how large it will be able to scale when the project gets traction.

What we learned

There are so many steps for an enterprise-grade application. As a Devops engineer by trade, the integration of all those pieces is what makes development fun and 2/3 of the tools (cloudflare, react-native, revenuecat) were brand new to me. They were fun to couple to the AWS and terraform I already know like the back of my hand.

What's next for Chappy Rides

We want to grow the app and will start with the people and places we know. We hope that it will catch on and make scheduling pickup easier with the community you've already built at the locations you frequent. We hope in a few years time that this can become a "second career" to foster growth and adoption.
