Inspiration
Our inspiration for ChanjoHealth came from observing the difficulties Kenyan parents face in tracking and managing their children's vaccination schedules. A notable example was the 2019 measles outbreak in Wajir County, where many children missed their immunizations due to inadequate tracking and reminders. This highlighted the urgent need for a solution to ensure timely vaccinations, prompting us to develop an app to address this critical issue.
In 2024, while vaccination rates and awareness have improved, challenges remain, particularly in rural areas. Access to reliable tracking systems and healthcare information is still limited, and gaps in the system occasionally lead to preventable disease outbreaks. ChanjoHealth aims to bridge these gaps by providing a digital solution through an app and a USSD that ensures no child misses their vaccination schedule, thereby improving community health outcomes in Kenya.
What it does
ChanjoHealth is a comprehensive immunization tracking and notification system designed to help parents in Kenya manage their children's immunization schedules. The app provides:
Child profiles for managing immunization records. Pre-loaded immunization schedules based on Ministry of Health guidelines. Timely reminders and notifications for upcoming immunizations in line with the child's birth date Appointment booking with nearby clinics. An admin section for doctors/health workers to log in and manage records. There is also a USSD working in correspondence with the app for people with no smart phones and for easy access when one doesn't have internet access.
How we built it
Research and Planning: Extensive research on immunization schedules and local healthcare practices in Kenya. Design and Setup: Created a user-friendly interface using wireframes. Set up the development environment with PHP, Laravel, Bootstrap, and CSS. Development: Frontend: Implemented user registration, login, child profile management, immunization schedules, notifications, and appointment booking features using HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. Backend: Set up the database structure and integrated Africa's Talking API for USSD functionality and SMS notifications using PHP and Laravel. Testing and Finalization: Conducted thorough testing to ensure smooth functionality and user experience.
Challenges we ran into
Data Accuracy: Ensuring the accuracy of immunization schedules and reminders required meticulous cross-checking with reliable sources and healthcare professionals. Technical Integration: Integrating the USSD functionality with Twilio and ensuring reliable SMS notifications involved significant troubleshooting. User Experience: Designing an intuitive interface for parents with varying levels of digital literacy required multiple iterations based on user feedback. Time Constraints: Developing a comprehensive solution within a limited timeframe required efficient planning and task prioritization.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully developed a functional immunization tracking and notification system within the hackathon timeframe. Integrated USSD functionality and SMS notifications using Africa's Talking API. Designed an intuitive user interface that caters to parents with varying levels of digital literacy. Implemented a reliable appointment system where also doctors and health workers can be involved
