Inspiration

The inspiration for the Chanjo Health Platform stems from a personal connection to healthcare, particularly in the context of child immunization. Growing up with my mother, who is a nurse, I witnessed the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, parents, and health agencies in managing immunization schedules. The desire to bridge the gaps in the current system and contribute to improving child health outcomes served as a driving force behind this project.

What it does

The Chanjo Health Platform is a comprehensive solution designed to automate and streamline child immunization management in Kenya. It addresses key pain points faced by hospitals, such as administrative burdens, low adherence to immunization schedules, and suboptimal data management. The platform offers features like automated scheduling, SMS reminders, follow-up calls, and stock-out notifications to enhance efficiency and improve overall immunization coverage.

How we built it

The project leverages ruby on rails for both frontend and backend to create an automated immunization management system. I started on the database schema first then commenced on the backend. After setting up all the models and controllers, i proceeded to create the corresponding views for the frontend bit. I then integrated third-party APIs, such as Africa's Talking and Twilio, to enable features like SMS reminders and automated follow-up calls.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenges in building the Chanjo Health Platform revolved around integrating third-party APIs. Ensuring smooth communication with Africa's Talking and Twilio APIs presented hurdles that required innovative solutions. The challenges revolved around configuration, setting callback urls and authentication errors. Overcoming these challenges required a deep understanding of the APIs documentation and finding ways to align their functionalities with the goals of the platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in successfully developing a transformative solution that addresses critical issues in child immunization management. The accomplishments include creating an automated system that reduces the workload on nurses, improves adherence to immunization schedules, and enhances data management for health agencies. Establishing a platform that contributes to the efficiency of healthcare delivery and ultimately leads to better child health outcomes is a significant achievement.

What we learned

The project provided valuable insights into the complexities of healthcare management, particularly in the context of child immunization. Integrating third-party APIs taught us the importance of adaptability and problem-solving skills in the development process. Additionally, the project highlighted the potential impact of technology in addressing healthcare challenges and improving public health outcomes.

What's next for Chanjo-Health

The future of Chanjo Health involves seeking partnerships with hospitals to pilot and scale the solution. We aim to implement the platform in real-world healthcare settings, gather feedback, and continuously refine and improve the system. Scaling the project to reach a wider audience and making a substantial impact on child immunization coverage in Kenya is the next step for Chanjo Health.
