Inspiration
The idea for ChangeMakers came from witnessing how technology can amplify social impact when applied thoughtfully. We wanted to build a platform that empowers communities to solve real-world problems, from education and health to environmental sustainability, by leveraging innovative digital solutions.
During the project, we learned how to design scalable and inclusive software solutions while balancing technical complexity with social impact. One of the biggest challenges we faced was integrating multiple
What it does
ChangeMakers is a platform that leverages technology to create solutions for social impact. From community support apps to data-driven tools for non-profits, it empowers users to address real-world problems efficiently. Our project aggregates resources, connects volunteers, and provides actionable insights to drive meaningful change in communities.
How we built it
We built ChangeMakers using:
Frontend: React.js for an interactive user interface
Backend: Node.js with Express for API endpoints
Database: MongoDB for flexible, scalable data storage
Cloud Services: AWS for hosting and storage
Other Tools: GitHub for version control, Figma for UI design, and REST APIs for external integrations // Example API call for fetching volunteer opportunities fetch('/api/opportunities') .then(res => res.json()) .then(data => console.log(data));
Challenges we ran into
Integrating multiple APIs to fetch real-time data for different communities
Designing a user-friendly interface that works for a wide range of users
Optimizing database queries to handle multiple simultaneous requests
Ensuring security and data privacy while allowing open access to resources
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully built a fully functional MVP in under 48 hours
Implemented a real-time volunteer matching system
Created a responsive and intuitive UI for both desktop and mobile users
Received positive feedback from early testers about usability and impact
What we learned
The importance of user-centered design in social impact applications
How to integrate multiple technologies (frontend, backend, cloud, APIs) efficiently
Effective team collaboration under tight deadlines
Practical skills in debugging, testing, and deploying full-stack applications
What's next for ChangeMakers – driving change with innovation.Add AI-driven suggestions to match volunteers with projects more effectively
Expand the platform to include gamification and incentives for participation
Open-source the project so communities worldwide can adapt it
Incorporate multilingual support to reach broader audiences
