Inspiration

We found that suicide among released prisoners was 18 times more common than in a prison's general population with particularly high risks during the first four weeks.

Ex-offender reentry programs are proven to help the recidivism rates among all ex-offenders regardless of sex, race, or creed. Many ex-offenders have a very hard time adjusting to life after prison; they served various years without exposure to the outside world. Through these programs, ex-offenders can start fresh and work their way to reintegrate back into society.

Through our small research, we discovered a key issue in an ex-con's rehabilitation was the lack of knowledge of available resources catered towards them. Our goal was to provide these resources and offer more than just links and basic information.

What it does

We decided to focus on some key features:

  • Single-Click Login: The user can log in to the website with the Metamask (blockchain/web3) addon and use a small preview of the upcoming web3/blockchain. This helps the user avoid using emails, storing them on our website, and only providing us a hex address that's already public. In addition, it provides a sense of privacy and only requires typing a temporary name when logging in.

  • Events: These events consist of counseling sessions with professional volunteers including Psychologists, non-profit local activists, and fellow ex-cons that managed to succeed after prison.

  • Community: We wanted to keep a community environment on our platform. We decided on using group chats, gathering resource information, and job opportunities.

  • Resource: Dedicated resources ranging from housing, government assistance, non-profit programs, etc.

How we built it

  • Metamask/Web3
  • Javascript
  • HTML
  • CSS & Bootstrap
  • Flask
  • jQuery
  • Saas

Challenges we ran into

We learned how to implement web3 technologies, Metamask integration to be specific. We also took time to understand the rights that prisoners lose - this was important to analyze the issues being faced and look for relevant resources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to collate the resources and ability to use them optimally. We engineered a solution to the satisfied the criteria described in the project specification. Our tool efficiently implements all available logic in a concise and easy-to-understand manner.

What we learned

We learned to implement web3 technologies and content moderation on a real-time basis. We also learned about the pain points and the policies that are being offered for newly released prisoners. We were also able to learn that there is a significant need for such tools in order to decrease recidivism.

What's next for Choices

  • Try to reach out to nonprofit organizations to increase the user database
  • Connect with the government to increase the awareness amongst the inmates
  • Reach out to advocated dealing with Pro Bono cases.
