Inspiration
Our team was inspired by the culture of mentorship and tutoring that often happens both in-person and online through community-building applications like Discord. We believe that this environment can be replicated specifically for young females going into STEM and a community can be built with females that are already in the field.
What it does
Our website is dedicated to linking youth with female mentors in STEM. Hearing the stories of successful women in STEM encourages females to follow their interests while the valuable advice provided by mentors will help mentees gain insight in the industry. The system is completely virtual, making it accessible to girls everywhere.
How we built it
We used the languages HTML, CSS, & Python along with resources such as React and Django
Challenges we ran into
The largest challenge we faced was the time constraint
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to produce a product with refined visuals and fairly complete functionalities in the given time frame
What we learned
We should have spent less time on smaller parts of the projects and spent more time on the fundamental components
What's next for Chalk
-If we were to develop this website, we would develop a texting function between the mentor and mentee. We would also use plug-ins to allow calling with cameras/screen-sharing. -We would design courses that can be completed by mentees to discover their interests in STEM fields. Mentors will also be able to help with completing these courses. -Our website would likely run with the help of donations. With enough funding, we would implement a way of paying mentors with enough experience in mentoring and positive feedback. This provides an incentive for users to become mentors.
