Inspiration
On 29th May 2026, a Chair O Plane in Happy Land Amusement Park, Kerala, India Collapsed injuring 5 people including 2 minors. The reason for collapse seems to weld failure at the chair o plane base frame. Such a critical failure not being came to the notice of the authorities surprised and worried me. When discussed with a government mechanical engineer (my team mate for this project), familiar with issuing fitness certificate to amusement parks it is came to know that, manual design verification of a single ride could take up to two months and the pressure is immense as the festival ride approvals are time sensitive. So we have created a parametric design verification system to help the engineers.
What it does
The engineers can input ride specifications and website calculates the codal compliance (as per IS 15475: 2022, EN 13841: 2019 and ISO 17842: 2023 ) of the as built ride with remedial measure for the failed parts.
How we built it
This calculates the load combinations as per selected IS 15475: 2022, EN 13841: 2019 and ISO 17842: 2023 and calculates the load - moment values using code aster FEA solver and the the load values are further used for stability and Ultimate Limit States of the material for compliance. The engineer can download the design verification report and remedial actions for the failed parts in PDF created using Report lab library.
Challenges we ran into
Having to solve the complex load path using FEA, we needed a opensource fea solver that can be fully scripted in headless way. Also each parameters being needed to be a user changeable inputs, we need a robust manually created test sets for different specs. Also different loadings needed values from different codes eg. for weld design we had to learn the euro code and IS 800 likewise for each component design, learning from the raw code statements were a bit tiresome and yet fun.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have fully working design verification system, that engineers across can use for verifying the compliance as built chair o plane design up to 38 seating capacity and 10 m ride height.
What we learned
- Code aster FEA scripting
- Chair O plane physics
What's next for Chair O Plane Design Analysis for Failure Prevention
We will be incorporating more amusement rides like Roller coasters, Giant wheels etc for the design verification according code requirements. So the open sourced repo under MIT Licence could help engineers to contribute and grow together as well
