Inspiration
HDB Carparks are communal places that we all utilize, yet rarely appreciate and often take for granted. Even with the Singaporean Government limiting vehicles on the street, it is hard to imagine carparks leaving our landscape anytime soon. Hence, our group wanted to create an application that allows our carparks to be better-maintained and better-utilized without the need to burden our existing workforce further.
What it does
We present “Park Me”, an all-in-one mobile application for public parking for motorists in Singapore. The parking spaces featured are managed by HDB, and will include common spaces such as open-air car parks near HDB estates, and multi-storey car parks (MSCPs). With the application, users will be able to:
- quickly find available parking lots nearby (based on user location), within seconds
- quickly find available parking lots near a specified postal code, within seconds
- save the specified parking location of their vehicle
- find their vehicle using their vehicle’s license plate number
- efficiently provide feedback of a particular parking lot
- review past feedback provided for a particular parking lot
How we built it
We utilized React Native as our frontend, Supabase with PostgreSQL as our backend, and implemented the API using expressJS.
Challenges we ran into
- Faced with a huge goal but limited time, our group realised midway through that some optional features could not be implemented if we were to submit our project before the time limit. Hence, we had to convene midway to discuss which core features to keep and which to discard, without compromising the aim of this project.
- Towards the end of the hackathon, we realised that there was a major miscommunication, with two members implementing the same feature separately due a miscommunication earlier. Fortunately, we were able to resolve the misunderstanding and got back on track soon after.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a mobile application that we feel Singaporeans would actually use, as it is minimalistic without being overly simplistic, thus utilizing the app will be easier for Singaporeans of all ages.
What we learned
- We learnt how to better manage projects with tight deadlines.
- We greatly increased our familiarity with the tech stack.
- We forged stronger bonds as a team :)
What's next for Park Me
In the future, we can potentially introduce an admin menu where HDB officials can tend to feedbacks and provide responses. Furthermore, the current demo application only features one layout of parking lots; with more time, a variety of layouts can be introduced so that users can have a fun and interactive experience to locate specific lots in parking spaces.
