Inspiration

Amidst the COVID-19 era, online learning's surge in popularity brought with it a challenge – the pervasive distraction dilemma. Navigating the vast internet ocean for education often led to unintended detours, with a University of California study revealing a 23-minute focus recovery time. The consequence: valuable learning moments lost to notifications and videos.

Enter Diss-Track, a web extension designed to reclaim focus. With features like website blocking, distraction-free mode, and custom timers, Diss-Track empowers users to stay productive. It even rewards users with its unique token, fostering motivation in the face of online distractions.

What it does

This project is about a Chrome extension called Diss-Track that helps with online distractions during online work sessions or studying. The extension has a task management system where you can create tasks and track the time spent on them. It also has a focus mode that blocks distracting websites and tabs and prevents you from creating new ones until you turn off the focus mode. Distrack also has its token called Hustle Token which you can earn by completing tasks. You can use these tokens to track your progress and stay motivated.

How we built it

SOLIDITY For developing smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain
MongoDB MongoDB is used for storing diverse user information, including profiles, settings, preferences, progress, and Hustle Coin balances.
HTML Constructs the core structure of the extension's user interface, including the header, navigation, content areas, and footer.
CSS From captivating colors to intuitive layouts, CSS polishes the user experience, making focus not just productive, but also visually delightful.
JAVASCRIPT It powers real-time updates, handles data like a champ, and even keeps the extension flexible for future customizations.
ETHERSCAN Track the movement of Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens across wallets and exchanges.

Challenges we ran into

Creating our extension was a bumpy ride. Tight deadlines forced us to compromise on some features like Hustle Coin integration, recommendations, and YouTube redirection. We even cracked the code for browser-smart contract interaction, but couldn't implement it due to Sepolia limitations. Google's new manifest version threw another wrench in the works, restricting functionality and requiring creative solutions. Our complex project structure and frontend-JS disagreements didn't help either, consuming a quarter of our time with revisions. Data management remains a sticking point, relying on basic storage for now. Despite the hurdles, we're proud of our finished product and plan to revisit those missing features in the future.

What we learned

Hackathon Hustle: We learned tons about building Diss-Track, our focus-boosting extension for online learners. Time pressure meant some features, like Hustle Coin integration and YouTube redirection, got sidelined, but we still shipped a powerful product!

Technical Triumphs: We conquered browser-smart contract interaction hurdles and navigated Google's Manifest V3 limitations with clever workarounds. Teamwork challenges surfaced when merging a complex structure and frontend code, but we iterated and refined it until it clicked.

Data Demystified: Time tracking, the core of Diss-Track, taught us data management is king. We juggled Chrome and local storage solutions, paving the way for future optimizations.
