Inspiration
In today's digital age, charitable giving should be as seamless as online shopping. Yet, many relief organizations struggle with complex donation processes, compliance requirements, and administrative overhead. We saw an opportunity to leverage DocuSign's powerful platform to bridge this gap, creating a solution that makes giving both effortless and transparent.
What it does
Chain of Good revolutionizes charitable giving through a fully integrated DocuSign workflow:
- Secure authentication through DocuSign OAuth
- Automated Terms of Service acceptance via Click API
- Streamlined donation forms using Web Forms API
- Digital consent declarations with eSignature API
- Real-time admin notifications through our custom Slack Extension App
- Secure payment processing with Stripe integration
- Automated invoice generation and delivery

How we built it
Building Chain of Good was an exciting journey through DocuSign's powerful ecosystem. We started by laying a solid foundation with DocuSign OAuth - letting users securely sign in with their DocuSign accounts felt like the perfect first step. Once that was working smoothly, we brought in the Click API to handle our terms of service acceptance, which was a game-changer for maintaining compliance records. The real magic happened when we started working with the Maestro API. It became the conductor of our entire donation orchestra, coordinating every step from the moment someone chooses to donate until they receive their confirmation. We were amazed by how the Web Forms API made collecting donor information feel so natural and secure.
One of our favorite parts was building the Slack Extension App. As developers, we get excited about notifications, and creating something that other DocuSign developers could reuse in their own projects felt incredibly rewarding. Tying it all together with Stripe for payments gave us a robust, production-ready solution we're proud to showcase.
Challenges we ran into
Let's be honest - juggling multiple DocuSign APIs was like learning to ride a bike while juggling! Initially, we struggled to make all the pieces talk to each other smoothly. The biggest head-scratcher came when building our Slack Extension App. Being one of the early developers to work with DocuSign's new extension platform meant we had to think outside the box. We spent quite a few late nights figuring out the best practices for extension development, but seeing that first notification pop up in Slack made it all worthwhile.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
You know that feeling when you solve a particularly tricky puzzle? That's how we felt when we got our custom Extension App working perfectly. Not only did we create something useful for our project, but we built it in a way that any DocuSign developer could plug into their own workflow. That's pretty cool! The seamless flow from OAuth sign-in to final donation confirmation still makes us smile. Every time we test the system and see how smoothly it handles everything - from document signing to payment processing to Slack notifications - we can't help but feel proud of what we've built.

What we learned
This hackathon has been like a master class in DocuSign's technology. We've gone from knowing the basics to understanding how to orchestrate complex workflows with Maestro. The Extension App platform opened our eyes to a whole new world of possibilities - it's amazing how much you can extend DocuSign's functionality when you really dig in. We also learned that sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. Initially, we wanted to build everything from scratch, but DocuSign's APIs are so well-designed that often they already had exactly what we needed.
What's next for Chain of Good
We're just getting started! Our immediate focus is on making our Slack Extension App available in the DocuSign marketplace - we really want other developers to benefit from what we've built.
