Inspiration

As university students who have spent one too many hours browsing Reddit and Facebook to learn more about courses we’re taking, we’ve noticed ourselves struggling to find a platform solely dedicated to providing information about classes we’re taking. When we do take a class we’re interested in, sometimes we don’t know enough people taking the class for assignments like group projects. That’s why we built CETA, to help people connect through the courses they’re taking, without wasting more time looking for resources.

What it does

CETA - Course Connect is a platform that connects students taking the same courses. It groups them based on the course codes of their classes, and auto-generates group chats so they can interact with fellow classmates and past class-takers. Users can share resources and chat through the messaging dashboard to find group partners, learn more about upcoming assignments, and even form in-person meet-ups.

How we built it

  • Front-end: We used HTML,CSS, and Javascript with Bootstrap for the main interface
  • Back-end: We used Java with the Spring Boot framework and had a basic in-memory database with H2
  • Design: Figma

Challenges we ran into

This was our first time implementing the Spring Boot framework so we had some challenges linking the front and back-end of our application. We also didn’t have much experience with front-end development (and web development in general) so it took us some time to navigate the tools we were using

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As university students who have spent a lot of time browsing Facebook and Reddit for information/group chats about the classes we’re taking, it’s great to create a platform that we both would use. We’re proud to have developed a project which can help students better connect with each other and aid in their studies.

What we learned

We both learned a lot about web development tools and languages while building our hack. It was a fun experience :)

What's next for CETA - Course Connect

We hope to continue work on this project after the hackathon to incorporate more features for our users.
