CervixAI: Transforming Cervical Cancer Screening Through Artificial Intelligence

The Inspiration

CervixAI was born from a simple but urgent question: why are thousands of women still dying from a cancer that is largely preventable and treatable when detected early?

Growing up in Botswana and working across technology, policy, and development spaces, I witnessed how gaps in healthcare access, limited diagnostic capacity, and late-stage detection continue to affect communities across Africa. Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in many low- and middle-income countries, not because effective prevention methods do not exist, but because early screening and diagnosis are often inaccessible.

The idea for CervixAI began during my participation in the Mandela Washington Fellowship at the University of Delaware, where I explored how emerging technologies could address pressing societal challenges. What started as an idea pitch evolved into a deep-tech health innovation focused on using artificial intelligence to improve cervical cancer detection.

Building the Solution

CervixAI is an AI-powered diagnostic platform designed to support earlier and more accurate cervical cancer screening. The project combines advances in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and healthcare innovation to assist healthcare providers in identifying abnormal cervical tissue and improving diagnostic decision-making.

The development process involved researching existing cervical cancer screening methods, understanding clinical challenges, exploring AI approaches for medical imaging analysis, and designing a solution that could eventually be adapted for resource-constrained environments.

At its core, CervixAI aims to bridge the gap between advanced medical technology and communities that need it most by creating tools that are affordable, scalable, and accessible.

What We Learned

Building CervixAI taught us that solving healthcare challenges requires more than developing a sophisticated algorithm. Technology must be designed around real-world healthcare systems, patient needs, ethical considerations, and the realities faced by medical professionals.

We learned the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between computer scientists, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and communities. A successful AI healthcare solution requires not only technical accuracy but also trust, usability, regulatory awareness, and responsible implementation.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the complexity of developing AI for healthcare. Medical AI requires high-quality datasets, careful validation, privacy protection, and clinical collaboration.

Access to representative datasets remains a challenge, particularly for African populations that are often underrepresented in medical research. Ensuring that AI systems perform effectively across diverse populations is critical to avoiding bias and creating equitable healthcare solutions.

Another challenge has been moving from an initial concept toward practical implementation. Transforming an idea into a deployable health technology requires continuous learning, mentorship, partnerships, and engagement with experts across multiple fields.

The Journey Ahead

CervixAI has evolved from a university-inspired idea into a deep-tech health innovation initiative. Through programs such as the MIT Kuo Sharper Center Deep Tech Program, we are continuing to refine the technology, strengthen our research foundation, and build partnerships needed to move toward real-world impact.

Our vision is to contribute to a future where no woman loses her life to cervical cancer simply because early detection was unavailable.

CervixAI: Detect earlier. Treat sooner. Save lives.
