Inspiration

As a lifelong lover of luxury fashion, I grew frustrated with two pain points: exorbitant retail prices and the risk of counterfeits in the second-hand market. Living in a city where sustainable consumption is core to daily life, I saw an opportunity to merge luxury accessibility with ethical shopping – creating a space where buyers trust every piece, and sellers get fair value for their pre-loved items. The vision was simple: make authentic luxury sustainable, affordable, and transparent.

What it does

Pre-loved Luxury is a certified pre-owned luxury marketplace that connects buyers and sellers across the US and Europe. Every item is verified by professional authenticators, with clear condition ratings and certification details. Users browse curated catalogs, submit items for consignment, explore style content, and save wishlists – all within a premium, intuitive UI designed to match luxury’s elevated aesthetic.

How we built it

I started with wireframing the page structure (Home, Catalog, Consignment) in Figma, adhering to the gold/black/off-white color palette to mirror luxury branding. Using React for the frontend, I built responsive grids for product cards and consignment forms, with Node.js/Express powering backend form storage and authentication flows. MongoDB stored user data and consignment submissions, while AWS handled image uploads for consignment items. CSS transitions and IntersectionObserver drove the premium animations (hero fades, scroll-triggered stats).

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was perfecting scroll-triggered animations to work seamlessly across all devices – older browsers lacked IntersectionObserver support, so I had to build fallbacks to avoid layout breaks. Form validation for the consignment page also proved tricky: ensuring required fields were enforced while keeping the UI clean (no jarring error messages) took multiple iterations. Additionally, balancing the "luxury" aesthetic (minimal, high-end) with functional filters on the Catalog page required careful UX tradeoffs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The hero section’s immersive 100vh design with smooth entrance animations captures the luxury vibe perfectly – users immediately feel the premium experience. The trust bar’s count-up animation adds a layer of credibility, and the product card hover effects (zoom, lift) make browsing feel tactile and engaging. Most importantly, the consignment form works flawlessly: validates inputs, stores data securely, and shows clear confirmations – a core functional win.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of responsive design for luxury UI – small details (gold accents, subtle shadows, transition timings) make all the difference in conveying premium quality. I also learned to prioritize accessibility: animations have fallbacks, and form errors are screen-reader friendly. On the backend, I mastered secure data storage for user submissions and wishlist data, balancing functionality with privacy.

What's next for this project

First, I’ll add real-time price trend data for luxury items (integrating market APIs) to help sellers price their consignments fairly. Next, I plan to expand the community section beyond static content – adding user-submitted style inspiration (moderated for quality) and a newsletter for luxury investment tips. Finally, I’ll integrate multi-language support (English, French, German) to better serve European users, and explore a simplified checkout flow (partnering with payment APIs) to complete the buyer journey.
