Inspiration
The inspiration for the "Celebrity Pollution Tracker" project stemmed from the growing need for transparency and accountability among public figures, particularly regarding their impact on the environment. We recognized that celebrities' air travel contributes significantly to pollution, and we wanted to create a tool that shed light on this issue to promote positive change.
What it does
The Celebrity Pollution Tracker is a platform that continuously collects data from FlightAware APIs and public FAA plane registration records to track the environmental impact of celebrity air travel. It calculates and displays real-time emissions data in a leaderboard format, revealing which celebrities are having the greatest environmental impact through their flights.
How we built it
We built the Celebrity Pollution Tracker by integrating FlightAware APIs and public FAA plane registration data into a custom-developed web application. We utilized a combination of programming languages, including Python for data retrieval and processing, and web development technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React for the user interface. The application is hosted on GitHub.
Challenges we ran into
Matching data from FlightAware and FAA sources often posed a challenge due to discrepancies in data synchronization. FlightAware and FAA data might not always align perfectly in terms of timing and details, which can lead to inaccuracies when associating a particular flight with a specific celebrity. Addressing these synchronization issues and ensuring that the data is not only accurate but also up-to-date was a significant challenge in the development of the Celebrity Pollution Tracker.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully integrating FlightAware APIs and FAA plane registration data into a functional web application. Creating a user-friendly leaderboard display that allows users to explore celebrity travel data. Raising awareness and initiating discussions about the environmental impact of celebrity air travel.
What we learned
Through this project, we've gained insights into the complexities of real-time data integration, privacy considerations, and the power of technology to inspire change. We've also learned how public awareness and education can be powerful tools in driving environmental responsibility.
What's next for Celebrity Pollution Tracker
Enhanced Data Sources: Expanding data sources to include more comprehensive aircraft emissions data. User Engagement: Implementing features to allow users to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement. Collaborations: Exploring partnerships with environmental organizations and celebrities to encourage greener travel practices.
