About the project

Inspiration

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is expected to play a critical role in achieving global climate goals, especially for hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, chemicals, and natural gas processing.

However, the development of CCUS is not only a technical challenge. It is also a challenge of policy coordination, project transparency, and knowledge accessibility.

We found that global CCUS information is fragmented across government policies, industry reports, academic publications, and project databases. Understanding the global transition requires connecting these scattered pieces of information:

  • Which countries are leading in developing CCUS policies/facilities?
  • How are regulatory frameworks evolving?
  • Where are large-scale projects being deployed?
  • How fast is the industry moving toward gigaton-scale carbon storage?

This inspired us to build CCUS Policy Hub — an open-source intelligence platform that helps researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals explore how the world is building the carbon management infrastructure of the future.

What it does

CCUS Policy Hub transforms fragmented CCUS knowledge into an interactive, structured intelligence platform.

It currently provides:

How we built it

CCUS Policy Hub was built as an open-source data and visualization platform.

What we learned

Building CCUS Policy Hub taught us that climate technology transitions require both engineering solutions and information infrastructure.

A technology can only scale when stakeholders can answer:

  • What is happening?
  • Where is it happening?
  • Why is it happening?
  • What enables or limits progress?

Reliable data and transparent knowledge systems are essential foundations for accelerating climate action.

We also learned that AI applications depend heavily on high-quality structured knowledge. Before creating intelligent systems, we need trustworthy data foundations.

What's next for CCUS Policy Hub

Our next steps are focused on transforming CCUS Policy Hub from a knowledge platform into an intelligent decision-support system.

Ultimately, CCUS Policy Hub aims to become an open infrastructure for understanding and accelerating global carbon management.
