Inspiration
The project is fully inspired by our own needs as students to host a birthday party / religious event and etc.
What it does
Catery connects the people who need someone to organize an event for them and true professionals of this craft.
How we built it
First, we started from the basic app with authentification , but then as the functional layers added up to the app, it turned into the ultimate solution for both the customers and service providers. Our team has splitted up onto three parts: backend, frontend and full-stack development. It was the first time for all of us to work in such circumstances, every time we thought that our skill level reached it's limit, the right amount of patience and curiosity helped to come up with a ready product.
Challenges we ran into
3 out of 4 members of our team have never used the git before. At first it was quite tough not to break into each other's code and break the working project, but as time went on we gained experience in git by minutes, not even hours. Also, one of the hardest challenges for us was not to quit until the end, since there were many situations where it seemed like the problem was impossible to be solved. However, lucky for all of us, the team was very supportive which helped to set the right mindset for hackathon. Furthermore, since for most of us it was the first time working in team environment, it was also challenging to came to a common style and structure of code that everyone would feel comfortable to work within.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
During 36 hours of hackathon, we can proudly say that we dedicated at least 30 hours for coding, which was the record for all of us. Moreover, despite 3 of 4 members being sophomores, the coding skills differed significantly, no matter which we managed to educate and help each other in such a short time period. One of the most important accomplishments would be the fact that with almost no experience in React and Firebase, we managed to use those technology for our favor although it seemed impossible at first to learn so many things in the context of only one hackathon.
What we learned
Since we had the choice of either acquiring skills and knowledge needed for our project or wasting our time and potential, we chose the first path and learnt how to build a project on React on frontend & Firebase(auth) and mongoDB & express on backend. However, it is completely unfair not to mention the teamworking experience that we got during our time at Shellhacks.
What's next for Catery
MOBILE! Although we still have big ambitions for the Catery website and have a long list of things we want to implement, it is not a secret that majority of the devices in the internet are mobile, so it would be a great step forward to try a new area and challenge ourselves once more.
