Inspiration
Growing up playing classic Pokémon games, we loved the strategy and unpredictability of 6v6 turn-based battles. We wanted to recreate that retro showdown experience in a fast, web-accessible simulator that lets players draft custom teams and jump straight into competitive tactical combat without setup friction.
What it does
Pokémon Arena is an interactive, browser-based 6v6 Pokémon battle simulator. Players can scout, reroll, and draft full 6-monster rosters with varied attack power and type match-ups. Once ready, the simulator runs automated turn-based combat with live HP updates, sprite visuals, retro audio, and a dynamic real-time battle log detailing every attack, switch, and knock-out.
How we built it
Backend / Core Engine: Built with Python to handle the underlying battle math, stats calculations, turn sequencing, and team drafting mechanics. Frontend:Interactive web UI hosted on Vercel, featuring clean blue vs. red team cards, custom status bars, animated retro sprites, and background music integration.
Challenges we ran into
Battle Logic & Synchronization: Translating turn-based battle mechanics into real-time UI updates while keeping the action log clear and readable. State Management:Ensuring stats, health bars, and active battle statuses remain perfectly synchronized across all 12 Pokémon during fast-paced exchanges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully delivering a functional, responsive 6v6 battle simulator with retro aesthetics and sound effects. Creating a smooth squad-drafting system that lets players quickly reroll and test different strategic team compositions.
What we learned
How to bridge backend simulation logic effectively with custom frontend user interfaces for real-time web feedback. Optimizing game state flows and UI responsiveness for browser-based interactive games.
What's next for catch-em-all
PvP Multiplayer: Introduce real-time head-to-head online matchmaking. Type Effectiveness & Movesets: Implement full elemental type charts, status conditions (burn, paralysis, poison), and custom move selections. Expanded Roster: Bring in Gen II+ Pokémon and customizable battle rules.
