Inspiration

We like cats, and we were inspired by a game called 'The Three Goblets', which introduced us to dungeon RPG games. We also developed and wrote cutscenes that act like a visual novel, so we got a good feel for 2d game development through this project. We also got to design lots of art.

What it does

It is a dungeon crawler using the Godot game engine, written in GDScript. You play as a cat and get to experience cutscenes, dungeon battles, pick up items, and explore a procedurally generated dungeon. You have limited turns to go through the dungeon and return home before your owner wakes up.

How we built it

We designed tons of art in Krita, including backgrounds, icons, player and enemy sprites, and music. We built the game in Godot and used GDScript rather than C# for simplicity. The game is theoretically cross-platform, but we only tested on desktop so far. We used Godot libraries for the cutscenes as well.

Challenges we ran into

Drawing was time-consuming and difficult. It was hard to come up with all the items and ensure everything was balanced, as well as come up with ideas for the enemies. Overall, we learned that game dev is pretty hard, but gratifying.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are glad we were able to ship a complete, working game in less than 24 hours. We had lots of fun and learned much, much more about game development than we previously knew. We also learned more about Krita and 2D art.

What we learned

We learned how to use the Godot engine, how to make 2D art in Krita, how to write a game story, how to make cutscenes, and how to develop complex systems like the minimap and random dungeon system.

What's next for Cat Game

In the future, we should make the dungeon a little less spread out so the player has to backtrack more and better experience it. We should also implement more monsters, and also ensure the plot is more consistent with the dungeon experience.
