Inspiration
We wanted to help bridge the gap between classroom based language learning and real world proficiency. We saw a need for a focused practice on numbers 1-100 because of how common they are in check out situations.
What it does
Cat Chat is a mobile friendly web-based game that challenges players to drill essential vocabulary to survive working a café checkout in their target language. With greetings, farewells and a special emphasis on numbers and currency, players can develop the confidence to build bridges in the real world by developing practical language skills.
How we built it
We used Stencyl, which is a video game dev tool that allowed us to create a simple interactive 2D game that can be published to the web. We knew this would be a text heavy game, and we were attracted to its Dialogue add on.
Challenges we ran into
With an in-program block like interface, we weren't able to collaborate with traditional written code via Git/GitHub.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite this, we still got past the learning curve of Stencyl, collaborated effectively and made a game that works!
What we learned
We learned Stencyl, Figma, and how to avoid game design questions that are more trouble than they're worth.
What's next for Cat Chat
Cat Chat is currently available in English and Spanish. More languages are on the way!
