TaskTabby being used, but in daytime!

Inspiration

There are always so many things fighting for our attention; dealing with them as a college student is even harder. TaskTabby creates a _ distraction-free _ way to see everything you need-- with the added bonus of adorable cats /ᐠ｡ꞈ｡ᐟ.

What it does

TaskTabby integrates a to-do list, the local weather, a pomodoro timer, Spotify music access, and the local time into one quick-glance widget. These features allow you to: 🐾 write your tasks into a list with check boxes to mark them as completed, 🐾 check the weather anywhere in the world with options to switch between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin (and corresponding cat icons that change during the day and night!) 🐾 set up study, short break, and long break times for a pomodoro timer, 🐾 pause/play Spotify and even skip to the next track or go back to the previous one for quick study music, 🐾 and look at the local time in 12 hour or 24 hour format!

How we built it

TaskTabby was programmed in Python using Pygame for the GUI. The Spotify and OpenWeather APIs were used to access respective data.

Challenges we ran into

While TaskTabby easily exceeded all our expectations, there were some moments it felt like this would turn into a cat-astrophe. They include: 🐾 understanding how to use and integrate APIs into a project, especially working with softwares like Spotify that require user login and permissions, 🐾 combining three separately-programmed portions of one project together, 🐾 and converting across time zones for weather and times.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a team of all first-time hackers, we are most proud that we turned our idea into reality! Not only did we have time to code the functional aspects, we designed the widget to have very cute graphics, buttons, and color scheme. The paws pause button was also a nice touch. Working on TaskTabby was an overall very paws-itive experience ₍^ >ヮ<^₎

What we learned

Building TaskTabby was our first time doing something like this, so every aspect was a great learning experience. We were able to learn about: 🐾 reading API documentation and the sheer variety of APIs that exist, 🐾 programming for Pygame using Python to create an interactive interface, 🐾 using our resources to understand new concepts such as libraries, 🐾 and emphasizing patience with both ourselves and the project.

What's next for TaskTabby

There are still so many paw-ssibilities for TaskTabby! We are looking at making TaskTabby: 🐾 easy to access by turning it into a Chrome extension or native .exe file, 🐾 better integrated with Spotify authentication to make logging into your account more seamless, 🐾 more sharable to other coders by splitting the code into more classes and functions, 🐾 , and more task-friendly with putting more items on the to-do list while removing completed tasks too!
