Inspiration
As a home cook who’s ruined too many beloved cast iron pans (thanks to bad seasoning and rust!), I wanted to create a resource that demystifies cast iron care. Every Western kitchen has at least one cast iron skillet – why not make caring for it intuitive, not intimidating? I drew from decades of family cooking wisdom and frustration with confusing online guides to build something visual and actionable.
What it does
CastIron Care is a free web guide for cast iron owners: step-by-step seasoning tutorials, dual cleaning methods (salt scrub/oil wipe), automated usage reminders for re-seasoning, rust/sticky surface repair guides, pro cooking tips, and a deep dive into cast iron science. It’s designed to make lifelong care simple for casual cooks and collectors alike.
How we built it
I started with wireframing core user flows (e.g., a first-time user seasoning their pan) then built the UI with HTML5/CSS3, focusing on GPU-accelerated animations for smooth interactions. JavaScript powered dynamic elements (counters, carousels, decision trees), and SVG brought visual storytelling (timelines, progress rings). I prioritized responsive design to work across phones, tablets, and kitchen laptops.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing visual flair (parallax scrolling, flip cards) with performance – over-animating risked lag on older devices. I also struggled to simplify technical seasoning science into approachable steps without losing accuracy (e.g., explaining polymerization without jargon). Mobile navigation required rethinking the bottom bar to avoid clutter on small screens.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Crafting an interface that’s as functional as it’s engaging – users don’t just read guides, they interact with them (e.g., drag-and-drop before/after repair sliders). The maintenance reminder tool has already helped friends stop neglecting their pans, and the oil comparison chart solves a common pain point for new owners.
What we learned
I mastered the art of subtle, purposeful animation – every hover, scroll effect, and transition serves a user goal (e.g., drawing attention to critical steps). I also learned how to translate niche expertise (cast iron chemistry) into accessible language, and the importance of testing with real home cooks (not just developers) to refine workflows.
What's next for this project
I plan to add video tutorials for each repair/seasoning step (shot in a home kitchen, not a studio, for authenticity), expand the food compatibility guide to include regional Western recipes (cornbread, steak searing), and build a simple log for users to track multiple pans. Eventually, I want to add a community section for sharing cast iron success stories – because nothing beats learning from fellow cooks.
