Inspiration

Aiming to mainly fulfill the track of Healthcare, Cassava (the name of a tropical root vegetable) was inspired by largely by Yuka, tackling aspects not accessibly covered by the app such as the comparison of more than one item and searching for items.Fun fact: the Cassava plant can be medicinally used to remove traces of cyanide from one's flesh.

What it does

Cassava can do three main things per food item: Scan the barcode of a food item, Search for a food item based on flexible search queries, or take in the manually-typed number of a food item.

After appending 2 or more food products, Cassava provides the user with comparisons of nutrient information (protein, carbohydrates, etc.) or hazardous ingredients between the products, additionally providing a ranking of best health score overall.

Challenges we ran into

Image Recognition turned out to be suboptimal for our app due to heavy usage. We opted for the search feature instead to account for this.

What's next for Cassava

We originally aimed to incorporate web scraping to gather negative reviews about each food product. This is an expansion Cassava could potentially receive if continued. Publication to mobile download sites would be another dream for this project. Potentially, we could implement simply looking at the stats for one food item rather comparing them.
