Inspiration
Managing money is one of the most common challenges people face, especially students and young professionals. Many budgeting tools are either too complex or require a lot of manual input, which discourages people from actually using them. We wanted to create a simple and intuitive app that helps users understand where their money goes and stay on top of their spending. CashPilot was inspired by the idea of having a “financial co-pilot” that guides users toward smarter budgeting decisions.
What it does
CashPilot is a budgeting app designed to help users track their expenses, categorize spending, and manage their finances more effectively. Users can log transactions, view spending insights, and monitor their budgets in real time. The app provides a clear overview of where money is being spent, helping users make better financial decisions and avoid overspending.
How we built it
We built CashPilot as a full-stack application. The frontend provides a clean and user-friendly interface where users can easily add and review transactions. The backend handles data processing, budgeting logic, and secure storage of user information. We implemented features such as expense tracking, budget categorization, and spending summaries. Throughout the hackathon, we collaborated using Git and focused on building a functional MVP that demonstrates the core concept of the app.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was working within the limited time frame of the hackathon while still trying to build a polished and functional product. Integrating different parts of the stack and ensuring the data flowed correctly between the frontend and backend also required careful debugging. Another challenge was deciding which features to prioritize so that we could deliver a working prototype rather than trying to build too many things at once.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we were able to build a working budgeting application in such a short amount of time. Despite the time constraints, we successfully implemented the core features needed to track expenses and visualize spending. We’re also proud of the collaboration and problem-solving that happened throughout the hackathon, which allowed us to quickly adapt and improve the project as we went.
What we learned
During this project, we learned a lot about rapid prototyping, teamwork, and prioritizing features under time pressure. We also gained experience working with full-stack technologies and managing a project from idea to functional prototype within a limited timeframe. The hackathon helped us improve our ability to quickly learn new tools and adapt when challenges arise.
What's next for CashPilot
Next, we plan to focus on monetization by introducing a freemium model. The core budgeting features will stay free, while a premium plan will offer advanced analytics and insights. We also plan to provide a discounted premium plan for students to keep the app affordable while supporting its growth.
