Inspiration

The amount of aquatic life that gets killed because of plastic on a yearly basis. Sweatcoin

What it does

We created a prototype of an app that will help users earn rewards by how much they recycle. This is possible by upgrading the bins we already have to include a QR code generator and weight counter at the bottom. This is to enable us to track how much the user is recycling. When the user recycles any amount of rubbish the bin will generate a QR code based on the amount of trash. This code can be scanned through the app which is going to add the applicable reward points to the users balance. These points can be used to earn rewards in real life which can be chosen through the app based on availability. There is a chatbot for the user to report the time, location and quantity of rubbish they have spotted. We use machine learning to analyse these data and predict the quantity of rubbish in different locations. Also, users can see how many rubbish in that location is predicted in the different timezone in the future. This information is displayed in the map so that the user can plan their rubbish picking based on location and amount of rubbish available. Not only that but the map can be used to find bins with the bar code generators available. There is also navigation available for the trash bin or rubbish spots selected.

How we built it

Currently, the prototype of the app was created in Adobe XD, but for future production Android Studio can be used for a fully functioning app. For the machine learning part, python was used with linear regression algorithm to predict the quantity of the rubbish at all location based on the records we have.

Challenges we ran into

some team members knew nothing about machine learning and their related packages before the competition. However after the workshop at Saturday, they learnt some basic operation and learnt more further operation on web. The model cannot run at the moment but it has a room of improvement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

we came together as a team and pooled all our ideas, overcame our differences in views and made an app which will help solve the plastic ocean crisis. We are really proud that we could do a demo with the prototype for our app.

What we learned

linear regression as part of AI using different software to help us with the development of our prototype time management to make something within the limited time that we had team work

What's next for Cash Your Trash

we will hopefully further develop the application to organise events that will bring communities together, to clean up after big events.
