Inspiration
Financial illiteracy is the root cause of a lot of major financial problems that affects a majority of the world. To us, the best way to combat financial illiteracy is to provide easy to use tools that make learning enjoyable, interactive and challenging.
What it does
It's a game that involves a multitude of financial concepts such as savings, budgets, bills and more. The player has to do jobs in order to make a living, and depending on how well they perform, they can trade in-game currency for things like cosmetics, or real-life prizes.
How we built it
We used Rails for the website dashboard, and Unity for the game. We used Postgres for the database.
Challenges we ran into
Database connectivity was certainly a roadblock that we faced. However, we were able to mitigate it. Also, it was a new experience for most of us to use Unity and Rails, and there was definitely a steep learning curve!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We love the look and feel of the game and website! It's nice and simple, which we wanted to focus on so that it would be easily understood and enjoyed by all regardless of technical literacy.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Rails, Unity, and how to plan databases for projects. However, the more valuable learning came in the form of understanding how important financial literacy really is. We required these solutions yesterday, as even in Canada most people don't consider themselves to be very confident with their finances.
What's next for Cash Quest
We'd love to continue with the project by adding more tasks, a larger map, and multiplayer just for a start!
