Inspiration

We’ve always loved fast-paced kart racing and chaotic battle modes, where skill mixes with fun. When Meta Horizons launched the Open Source Champions contest, we saw the perfect chance to finally build the kart game we had always wanted—but with a remixable twist. Our goal: create a racing system that’s fun to play right away and even more fun to customize.

What it does

Crazy Cart Racing is a remixable Battle Kart Racing world in Horizons. Players race go-karts, fire projectiles, and compete for best times, while spectators enjoy unique tools like follow-cams, teleport spots, and a live minimap of the track. A custom leaderboard system tracks race positions, usernames, and top times. Best of all, every element—tracks, vehicles, scenery, projectiles—can be remixed, so creators can make the world their own.

How we built it

Scripting: built by free.light, using Horizons’ core 2.0.0 TypeScript, local and server mode scripts all stored separately in 2 ts files for distribution/packaging Environment & art assets: Created by DJ M3N4C3, including the world layout, track assets, vehicles models, complete environment, graphics, etc. Sound design: a collaboration between free.light and DJ M3N4C3 to make racing and combat more immersive

Challenges we ran into

Balancing gameplay: keeping kart speed, boosts, and projectiles fun but fair Scripting: This was free.light's first ever type script project for Meta Horizons Remixability: Making sure the system can be used in various types of scenery not just one track and terrain type. This is also DJ M3N4C3's first run at creating on the platform as well. Definitely a learning curve at the start.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building a fully working battle-racing system in Horizons. Creating spectator features that make watching as fun as racing. Designing a project where remixing is not an afterthought but the main feature.

What we learned

How to push Horizons’ gizmo systems to do really cool things. That remixable games need just as much polish in how they’re built as in how they’re played. The value of collaboration, combining different skills—coding, art, and sound design—for a complete experience.

What's next for Crazy Cart Racing Project

More locations - tracks styles & scenery, more battle item types + vehicle reactions, more vehicle features
