The inspiration comes form looking for a design solution for home interior that is actually better and logistically makes more sense than in real life.
This interior design MR experience helps users place carpets into their chosen space to see how it would look in real life.
Built version: 2022.03.30f1 Unity (proudly presenting!) Most important SDK: all-in-all Meta Core SDK (mother of all SDKs!)
In our APK built version users can choose the materials they like in the app and have them placed on the rug/carpet. There it's possible to walk around with a virtual carpet to place it in your room with ease, where you like - so users/consumers can take better decisions before purchasing one; OR designers can test their designs before sending it to the factory perhaps!
However, we have also worked on scenes where it's possible to scan floor with furniture around and see a fully floored carpet (also with 2022.03.30f1) - which is actually the prime feature for our product; but for the crunch time and for not being super accustomated to the currents trends in MR we couldn't built that part in the SDK.
Listing out our challenges:
- A lot debugging with the Unity Version Hackathon suggested!
- Not being able to find a third person (although it wasn't a very big problem).
- Skipping UX and voice overs; although we had a interaction flow and voice over slips. The debugging took so long (2 days) that we ended up doing the whole project in a very messy and funny way! XD
- Having to change and adjust new plans under stress, in order to build something by deadline
- It was a bit distracting working around so many fun people! It was a challenge as a developer, but not a bad one :)
Accomplishment we are proud of:
- We have a finished build hurray!
- We were able to stick to our initial concept, although we faced so many tech hurdles.
- Making something we actually believe can be useful!
- Both of us didn't even have Unity in our computer just a year back, and here we are, being courageous to walk in here as a team of two, makes us the proudest among all points!
What we learned:
- A lot of debugging -For working in a sprint style; realized a of hacks we can do in MR (for ex. 3D should be always spawned rather than manually placed!)
- This is our first MR built; also our first Utility and Design product - so there are a lot of things we learnt just by doing things in this department
- Learnt a lot of technical things from the mentors (for ex. Meta link sometimes crashed just because the Oculus needs a restart at times, about how to link Android Studio with Unity (although I didn't go for it later).
- Learnt somethings about what kind of mindset a XR dev needs
- We were able to map where we are in the industry as developers by working with the Super Mentors
What's next for Carpet:
- Iterate on how the user can choose the different texture, size, and shape
- Work on the game logic on how the user can change the carpet texture for the whole floor
- Incorporate voice prompts and AI
