Inspiration

Asian Carp are an invasive species that are threatening many freshwater ecosystems in North America. In order to prevent its spread, we can measure environmental variables that are ideal spawning conditions for these fish. By monitoring these at risk areas, we can prevent the spread of the species.

What it does

Show up to date status of at risk streams in North America.

How I built it

Using Django framework we pull the data from http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis and compile it to display the status of at-risk streams on a map. The front end is written in jquery.

Challenges I ran into

Finding a reliable data source and parsing it. Version control issues. Setting up Django.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

A useful app that has a lot of potential for further growth

What I learned

Django, invasive species prevention

What's next for Carp Watcher

Watching other invasive species
