Inspiration
CaringU was inspired by a simple concern: how can we help older adults stay safe and independent when their families cannot always be nearby? From scam calls and suspicious QR codes to medication confusion, everyday situations can become stressful when someone lives alone.
What it does
CaringU is a voice-first AI companion designed to help older adults stay safe while keeping their families connected. It demonstrates scam protection, QR-code risk detection, medication clarification, permission-based actions, controlled pharmacy payments, family alerts, weekly summaries, and photo sharing.
How we built it
CaringU combines AI with fixed safety rules. It uses Amazon Bedrock or NVIDIA Nemotron for agent reasoning, an MCP server to manage actions and confirmations, OpenCV for QR-code processing, Amazon Polly for voice responses, PayPal for permitted payments, and AWS infrastructure.
Challenges we faced
The key challenge was balancing a natural conversational experience with reliable safeguards. AI should not independently authorize sensitive actions. CaringU is designed around explicit confirmation, configured limits, and family escalation.
What we learned
Building CaringU reinforced that responsible AI is not only about generating helpful responses. It is also about controlling what happens next, handling uncertainty, and being transparent about limitations.
Our guiding principle is simple: The AI talks. The rules decide. And the family is never far away.
